Texas Mom Faces Unexpected Social Media Reaction Over Daughter’s Photo

A Texas mother, Kiely Branch, encountered an unexpected wave of social media reactions after sharing a picture of her eldest daughter online. Branch, who is raising four children under the age of 5, is also preparing for the arrival of her fifth child. She frequently documents her family life on social media, capturing both the amusing and challenging moments.

“Life in our house is definitely never boring,” Branch shared in a conversation with Newsweek. Many parents like Branch share their family’s experiences; a 2021 Security.org survey reported that 77% of U.S. parents post photos, videos, or stories about their children online, illustrating the prevalence of this trend, often referred to as “sharenting.”

Branch’s recent TikTok post featuring her 4-year-old daughter attracted significant attention, prompting social media users to advise her to consult a doctor due to her daughter’s eyebrows. Initially, the post did not gain much traction. Branch recounted, “The views were extremely low, and I even considered deleting it. Then the next morning, it had taken off.”

She was confused by the surge in messages until she read the comments. “A surprising number of people were telling me I needed to have my daughter checked for a particular genetic condition because of her eyebrows,” she explained.

“People were suggesting a genetic condition called Sanfilippo syndrome because they felt that her dark, full eyebrows were a symptom,” Branch said.

Sanfilippo syndrome, also known as mucopolysaccharidosis type III (MPS III), is a rare genetic disorder that impairs the breakdown of certain sugar molecules. This results in progressive damage, primarily affecting the brain and nervous system. Symptoms typically emerge in early childhood and can include developmental delays, speech difficulties, and behavioral issues. Some physical traits, such as prominent eyebrows and a broad forehead, may also be present. However, thick eyebrows alone are not indicative of the condition.

Despite the online speculation, Branch emphasized that her daughter’s eyebrows are not unusual within their family. “Her eyebrows aren’t unusual in our family,” Branch noted. “Both her father and I have naturally full eyebrows.” She humorously added that their children were likely to inherit these traits.

Curious about Sanfilippo syndrome, Branch researched it further but verified that her daughter displayed none of the associated symptoms. “My daughter doesn’t have the issues people assumed,” she stated. “She’s never had an ear infection or other problems people mentioned.” Their family’s pediatrician and other medical professionals have never raised concerns about her development.

Branch found it surreal that strangers attempted to diagnose her daughter based on a couple of photos. “The comments became more aggressive,” she remarked, noting some accused her of neglect for not taking her daughter to a doctor. Despite the distress, she reflected on the experience as a peculiar episode of ‘internet diagnosis.’

“It’s been really interesting watching the internet try to figure out a child they’ve never met from two photographs,” Branch concluded.
