Texas Senate Race Heats Up with Controversial Comments and Political Clash

Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico recently drew attention when an old interview resurfaced. In this interview, Talarico praised his church for housing a family of illegal immigrants facing deportation by ICE. He humorously remarked that ‘Christianity is just another word for causing trouble.’

Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian and Democratic state representative, is challenging Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for a crucial Senate seat. He attributes his entry into politics to his faith, stating that ‘justice is love out in public.’

During the interview on Texas Impact’s ‘Weekly Witness’ in June 2023, Talarico highlighted his church’s history of supporting progressive causes like LGBTQ rights and welcoming diverse members, including an atheist. He also cited his church’s support for an undocumented family, which influenced his decisions to teach in public schools, lead an education nonprofit, and pursue a political career.

In another part of the conversation, Talarico criticized what he termed ‘Christo-fascism’ and the religious right for pushing a particular version of Christianity. He cited examples such as Texas laws requiring schools to display the Ten Commandments and replacing guidance counselors with chaplains. He also mentioned the state’s school voucher program, bans on sex-change procedures for minors, and Texas’ abortion ban as manifestations of this movement.

Republican National Committee spokesman Zach Kraft described Talarico as a dangerous figure. He accused Talarico of encouraging policies that would weaken border security and law enforcement. Talarico’s campaign spokesperson, JT Ennis, defended him, saying that Talarico is committed to fighting corruption in line with Christian teachings and supports strong border security and police funding.

Despite Republican criticism, Talarico currently leads in the polls. Paxton and his supporters argue that Talarico’s progressive stances could negatively impact him long-term. Madison Cercy, Paxton’s spokeswoman, criticized Talarico’s religious views and his stance on social issues, suggesting they conflict with traditional Texas values.

Paxton expressed confidence in his campaign, emphasizing that as voters learn more about Talarico, they will make informed choices. Both campaigns continue to vie for voters’ support in this high-stakes election.
