The term ‘Blue MAGA’ has emerged as an insult used predominantly by young progressives online. It combines the Democratic Party’s team color with President Trump’s slogan ‘Make America Great Again’, and is deemed as a call-out used by Gen Z to express dissatisfaction with traditional party politics. The term highlights a perceived dangerous similarity between older liberals and Trump supporters, according to the young progressives.
During the celebration of Claire Valdez’s primary victory, a Democratic socialist congressional candidate, some Democratic Party reactions led to the term’s increasing use. For these progressives, older liberals don’t fully grasp the urgency of current political climates, nearly equating them with Trump and his supporters.
Progressive streamer Hasan Piker has used the term ‘Blue MAGA’ to describe an illogical devotion to party establishment. Unlike MAGA, which focuses on loyalty to a single person, ‘Blue MAGA’ is centered around the image created by party consultants and lobbyists. Piker clarifies that while ‘Blue MAGA’ is not an exact equivalent to MAGA, social media favors such labels for their easy application. In his view, MAGA leaves power in Trump’s hands, whereas ‘Blue MAGA’ leaves it with a neoliberal Democratic Party limiting potential progressive changes.
The resentment from moderate Democrats towards the far left has spurred an equally intense backlash from young progressives who embrace terms like ‘Blue MAGA’ to challenge the status quo.
