The Intriguing Dan Sullivan Dynamics in Alaska’s Senate Race

The Alaska Senate race has gained attention with the presence of multiple candidates named Dan Sullivan. Incumbent Sen. Dan S. Sullivan is running for re-election, facing retired teacher Dan J. Sullivan and Democratic former Rep. Mary Peltola. Adding to the intrigue, Dan A. Sullivan, a Republican and former mayor of Anchorage, endorsed Sen. Dan S. Sullivan for another term.

“As the OG Dan Sullivan, I urge Alaskans to vote for Sen. Dan S. Sullivan. He’s been great for Alaska,” wrote the former mayor on Facebook.

In the recent all-party primary, both Sen. Dan S. Sullivan and Peltola advanced to the general election slated for November. The primary uses ranked-choice voting, where the top four finishers progress regardless of political affiliation. NBC News has yet to announce the other two candidates, but Dan J. Sullivan might be among them.

The Alaska Senate race is a highly competitive contest this cycle, as control of the upper chamber is at stake.

As votes continue to be tallied, Peltola currently holds 48% of the vote, while Sen. Dan S. Sullivan has garnered 43%. Republican candidate Dan J. Sullivan has 2.4%, with other contenders receiving even fewer votes.

Democrats see potential to flip this seat in November, with the Cook Political Report classifying the race as a tossup.

The presence of Dan J. Sullivan as a candidate has sparked legal and political discussions. Some allege his candidacy aims to create voter confusion, distracting from Sen. Dan S. Sullivan’s support, and suggest possible coordination with Peltola. Both Dan J. Sullivan and Peltola deny any collaboration.

Last week, Sen. Dan S. Sullivan placed second in the primary. The Alaska Supreme Court recently allowed Dan J. Sullivan to remain on the ballot after he was initially disqualified by the state Division of Elections. NBC News notes that both state and federal prosecutors are examining whether the race might involve a plot to mislead voters. This month, a grand jury issued subpoenas for information from witnesses connected to Dan J. Sullivan’s campaign.
