In 1979, Jack Lambert, a Hall of Fame linebacker, commented on the NFL’s tightened roughing the passer rules, suggesting the league put dresses on quarterbacks. Lambert’s sarcastic remark highlighted concerns that have only grown over time. Today, with numerous rules to safeguard quarterbacks, injuries persist.
Heading into Week 4 of the current NFL season, six starting quarterbacks have faced injuries. Players in this crucial role continue to bear the brunt of the game’s physical nature.
Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts addressed the issue, stating that changing rules isn’t the solution for reducing quarterback injuries. “Jack Lambert’s famous quote was to put dresses on quarterbacks. A funny idea, as I have good-looking legs,” Fouts joked in a recent interview.
Fouts elaborated on the challenge: today’s game is intensely violent. Defenders possess superior athleticism compared to offensive linemen, enhancing the complexity of blitz strategies targeting quarterbacks. Despite rulebook alterations, the game’s inherent nature results in injuries.
The sport’s evolution has seen players grow bigger, stronger, and faster. While the NFL enacts measures to protect quarterbacks, the physical demands of football inevitably lead to injuries.
Unfortunately, the New York Giants’ starting quarterback, Jaxson Dart, is expected to miss the remainder of the season due to a meniscus surgery. Other quarterbacks, like Sam Darnold and Kyler Murray, have returned or are anticipated to return soon. Teams such as the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears have secured victories with backup quarterbacks, but their offenses haven’t performed as robustly.
Fouts emphasized the importance of offensive line performance in safeguarding quarterbacks. “Protecting the quarterback is achieved not by rules, but through better play up front,” he stated.
As teams aim to keep their backup quarterbacks protected, the possibility of relying on a third-string quarterback spells potential trouble. A team might endure a period with a backup, but its performance can swiftly decline if pushed to use a lesser-ranked player.
Fouts, a former standout at Oregon and a 15-season player for the San Diego Chargers, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993 for his contributions.
