In ten critical sectors, such as automotive, aviation, and HVAC, the supply of skilled labor meets a mere 42% of the demand. This shortfall results in a $7.42 billion annual loss in wage-based economic output. Paradoxically, this shortage persists despite rising conversations about skilled trades.

High Demand, High Pay

The roles of skilled technicians are characterized by high skill requirements, attractive wages, and increasing demand. Most job openings offer salaries between $50,000 and $80,000, often without the need for a four-year degree, surpassing national median wages. Top-tier technicians can earn over six figures. Modern vehicles and aircraft are complex systems, akin to computers and data centers, yet skilled technicians remain an untapped resource.

In response, companies like Ford, Carrier, and Snap-on have pledged millions toward scholarships, grants, and workforce training. Although interest in and investment in skilled trades grows, the technician shortage persists.

Underestimated Workforce

The reason lies partly in perception. When thinking of skilled labor, construction workers or plumbers often come to mind, while the critical roles of automotive, aircraft, and HVAC techs, among others, remain overshadowed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports around 6 million individuals in maintenance and repair, omitting welders and the self-employed.

Yet, the technician ecosystem—spanning automotive, aviation, industrial machinery, and energy—encompasses about 7 million workers, collectively earning over $375 billion a year. The fragmented categorization of these jobs in labor data creates an illusion that hinders their visibility and proper valuation.

Economic Significance

Technicians play a vital role across industries. Americans will spend $435 billion maintaining and repairing vehicles this year, while airlines allocate approximately $120 billion to aircraft upkeep. As Jim Farley, Ford CEO, suggests, this workforce forms the ‘essential economy,’ yet it faces sustainability challenges due to workforce shortages.

The importance of technicians is growing amid national trends like reshoring manufacturing, powering AI data centers, and bolstering the defense base. Carolyn Lee of the Manufacturing Institute notes that a potential shortage of 1.9 million manufacturing workers by 2033 poses an economic and national security issue.

Building Capacity

To address this challenge, it is crucial to make this workforce visible. Labor statistics must consolidate technician roles to reflect true size and value. Policymakers and funders need clearer pathways to support scholarship and apprenticeship programs targeting automotive, HVAC, and industrial machinery technicians.

Corporations investing in manufacturing, AI, and energy should consider technicians in their strategic plans. New facilities, from factories to data centers, depend on the ability of skilled workers to keep them operational.
