The Rising Trend of Head Spas for Relaxation and Wellness

1 month ago 0

In recent years, head spas have emerged across the United States, focusing on cranial and facial relaxation. Originating in Japan, head spas blend massage techniques with herbal treatments. These sessions have evolved since gaining traction in Japanese salons in the 1990s and spreading throughout Asia.

Customer Experience

Karena Kong, a regular at Nen Head Spa in San Francisco, notes the appeal of the head-focused approach. “Typically, when you go for a massage, the focus is often on your back. I always wished for more attention to my head, face, and neck,” said Kong. Head spas offer 90 minutes of concentrated massage in these areas, providing a unique focus she appreciates.

The Head Spa Process

“The core part of it is actually getting your hair washed,” shared Peter Tham, owner of Nen Head Spa, where massages cost about $100 per hour.

Sessions usually last 60 to 90 minutes, starting with a scalp inspection. This is followed by a sequence of deep cleansing, exfoliation, steam, and extended head, face, and neck massage. Additional services often include essential oils, conditioning masks, and aromatherapy in a serene setting with dimmed lights and soothing music.

Health Claims and Caution

Some head spas claim benefits like stress relief and treatment for conditions such as scalp skin issues, hair loss, and alopecia. Experts advise consultation with dermatologists for medical concerns. “It’s important to differentiate relaxation treatments from medical advice,” stated Zakia Rahman, a dermatology professor at Stanford University School of Medicine. Head spas can complement medical treatments, offering relaxation but not replacing professional medical advice.

Client Feedback

Clients like Crystle Vitari, who first experienced head spas in South Korea, find them “rejuvenating” and deeply relaxing. “Every time, I fall asleep and take a nap because it’s so relaxing,” she said.
