Overview of the 2027 Election

The next Chicago mayoral election is scheduled for February 23, 2027. Nine candidates have declared their intentions to run, with more candidates expected to announce their campaigns in the coming months. While the lineup includes seasoned political figures, it also presents fresh faces unfamiliar with city politics. Mayor Brandon Johnson, currently serving his first term, has yet to announce if he will seek reelection.

As the nomination process begins on July 28, candidates will work to collect the required 12,500 signatures to secure their place on the ballot. The petition process is notorious for its challenges, as rivals often contest one another’s signatures. If no candidate garners more than 50% of the vote in February, a runoff between the top two candidates will occur on April 6, 2027, followed by the inauguration in May.
