Todd Monken Unfazed by Fan Reactions Over Deshaun Watson’s Starting Role

The Cleveland Browns are preparing for the 2026 season with Deshaun Watson as their starting quarterback. Despite fan dissatisfaction, Head Coach Todd Monken remains resolute in his decision.

Watson faced boos from Cleveland fans after expressing criticism in the media. His journey to regain fan support likely appears challenging, but Monken seems unperturbed by the controversy.

During a Tuesday press conference, Monken addressed the fan displeasure regarding Watson’s status: “Absolutely not bothered,” he affirmed, according to Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk.

Monken emphasized that his decision is based on what benefits the Browns in Week 1 and throughout the season. “My decisions focus on the team’s best interest,” Monken stated.

Discussing Watson’s selection, Monken highlighted his player’s knack for creating explosive plays. “You can’t achieve elite offensive performance without explosive plays,” Monken explained. “Studies show the importance of achieving even one explosive play per drive.”

Monken expressed confidence in Watson’s ability to execute long passes: “Every coordinator pursues explosive plays, aiming to minimize turnovers. The defense counters this strategy by trying to prevent them. That’s the strategic challenge.”

Monken believes in Watson’s capabilities to advance the ball downfield, asserting, “We start Deshaun because of our confidence in him.”

Watson’s ability to produce crucial plays will determine his continuing role as Cleveland’s primary quarterback. If those efforts falter, his tenure might face new challenges.
