Tom Steyer, a progressive Democrat, has expressed his desire to make housing more affordable in California if he becomes governor. However, his immense wealth has raised questions among some voters.
Steyer accumulated billions leading a successful hedge fund in San Francisco, enabling him to acquire multiple luxury homes. His real estate portfolio resembles the offerings of a high-end property magazine.
Among his properties are cliff-top mansions in San Francisco with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, and a classical home in a gated community nearby. He also owns a $2 million condominium in downtown San Francisco with sights of City Hall. Another property near Stinson Beach offers proximity to the Pacific Ocean.
Steyer owns significant land near Pescadero, south of San Francisco. There, he acquired 11 parcels, including single-family and mobile homes, forming an 1,800-acre grass-fed cattle ranch named TomKat, a combination of his and his wife Kat Taylor’s names.
His real estate extends beyond California. He has a home on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe and an apartment on New York City’s Fifth Avenue, with a separate unit labeled as a “maid’s room.” Altogether, records indicate that Steyer and his entities own more than a dozen homes.
During the campaign, it was noted that a family friend rented Steyer’s apartment in the Four Seasons Residences downtown. This expansive real estate ownership raises discussions as Steyer promotes housing affordability solutions.
