Tony Romo’s Uncertain Future at CBS

Tony Romo’s position at CBS appears increasingly unstable following his recent arrest. Last week, OutKick reported that Romo’s OWI arrest threatens his future beyond an indefinite suspension. Prior to this incident, CBS had doubts about retaining him as their lead NFL analyst beyond this season. This concern comes as CBS prepares to broadcast the Super Bowl in 2028.

Romo’s performance has come under scrutiny in the past three years. Critics highlight his lack of preparation, odd antics, and forced interactions with co-announcer Jim Nantz. According to Puck News, the sports media consensus suggests that “Romo won’t be back.” The publication noted that the network might use a morals clause from his contract to terminate him due to the arrest footage. Although Romo’s $18 million a year contract runs through 2030, his legal team would likely contest any contract termination.

Romo’s departure would create a significant vacancy alongside Jim Nantz in sports media. J.J. Watt, following a strong trial period in the booth, is set to replace Romo this season. If Watt’s chemistry with Nantz proves successful, CBS may consider him as a long-term replacement.

CBS, owned by the Ellison family, has significant resources and might pursue a prominent figure before the upcoming Super Bowl. Potential candidates with expiring contracts include Troy Aikman, Kirk Herbstreit, and Greg Olsen. Aikman, widely regarded as the top NFL color commentator, might command a $25 million yearly deal to leave ESPN for CBS. Olsen, currently a secondary analyst at Fox, possesses the capability to step up as a leading analyst.

Herbstreit, though primarily known for college football on ESPN’s College GameDay, remains a distant option since CBS lacks the college football inventory to attract him.

As for Romo, considering the shifting landscape with more streamers hosting NFL games, his booth prospects with other networks appear limited.
