Tornado Strikes Northeastern Wisconsin, Causes Extensive Damage

A tornado hit northeastern Wisconsin, causing midday darkness and leading workers to seek shelter in basements due to extreme winds that damaged homes and scattered debris across highways. Power outages affected over 30,000 people, although no fatalities or injuries were reported by Monday evening. Winnebago County officials continued searches for any casualties, according to Gordon Hintz, a top elected official from the area.

The National Weather Service confirmed the tornado in Winnebago County, located about 90 miles northwest of Milwaukee. Cities like Appleton and Menasha experienced significant damage, with Police Chief Matt Albrecht of Menasha noting severe impacts to homes and businesses.

The tornado was part of a larger storm system that moved through the Great Lakes, fueled by heat and humidity build-up, as explained by Scott Berschback of the National Weather Service. Restoration of power in affected areas could take days, said Hintz.

Heather Schroeder described hearing cracking and popping as the tornado damaged buildings near her, including a laundromat, a bakery, and a neighborhood tavern in Menasha. Rescuers pulled an individual from a damaged structure, but their survival was uncertain.

Schroeder remarked on flipped vehicles and a gas leak at the laundromat. In Menasha, roofs were ripped off, and vehicles were overturned near Lake Winnebago.

Greg Van Driest described witnessing the sky turning as dark as night in downtown Appleton, likening the atmosphere to midnight.

Residents like Cassandra Baron worked to clear fallen tree branches after the storm.

Officials activated all possible warnings to encourage people to seek safety. Holley Kamba of the National Weather Service reported widespread damage in southern Outagamie County and eastern Winnebago County, with numerous trees and power lines down.

Governor Tony Evers stated Wisconsin’s readiness to support affected communities. Meteorologists previously issued a tornado warning for the Fox Cities region, including Appleton, Menasha, and Neenah, warning of flying debris and potential damage.

Social media shared images showing severe damage in Appleton, including roofless homes, toppled trees, and a car tossed onto a lawn.

Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson noted extensive and severe damage in Menasha and Fox Crossing without reported fatalities. Menasha’s entire electric grid was down, affecting approximately 18,000 residents.

A shelter was established at a local church in Menasha. Access to impacted areas was limited due to obstructed roads, Albrecht stated, advising against entering affected zones.

The storm began clearing Wisconsin and moving towards Chicago as it dissipated.
