Chicago Cubs player Nico Hoerner made a remarkable play during their game against the Houston Astros, reminiscent of a basketball move. In the fifth inning of the Cubs’ 3-0 defeat at Wrigley Field, Hoerner demonstrated his exceptional defensive skills.
The Astros catcher, César Salazar, attempted to start the inning with a bunt single against Cubs pitcher Colin Rea. As a two-time Gold Glove awardee, Hoerner reacted swiftly to Salazar’s attempt, who is known for his speed. Hoerner picked up the ball bare-handed, with limited options due to Salazar’s fast running.
In a creative display of agility and quick thinking, the 29-year-old Hoerner maneuvered his right leg and threw the baseball between his legs toward first base. Michael Busch, positioned at first base, caught Hoerner’s impressive throw, completing the play and getting Salazar out.
Hoerner’s through-the-legs pass evoked memories of past legendary plays by New York Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon and Chicago White Sox Mark Buehrle, both of whom executed similarly stunning moves on the field. Colon famously flipped a ball behind his back for an out, while Buehrle executed a through-the-legs glove flip after a ball ricocheted off his foot.
Despite Hoerner’s highlight-reel-worthy play, it was one of the few bright moments for the Cubs in their loss to the Astros. The Cubs, holding a record of 29-23, will aim to recover in the final game of the series against the Astros, who are at 22-31, hoping to avoid a sweep.
