Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce achieved a significant career milestone on Sunday night against the Seattle Seahawks. Despite the Chiefs’ 20-3 defeat, Kelce’s accomplishment marked a high point in an otherwise disappointing evening.
The Chiefs’ offense struggled, with no player standing out as in previous matches. Kelce caught four passes for a total of 44 yards. While not a standout performance on the night, these catches played a significant role in Kelce’s career achievements.
With his 1,103rd career reception, Kelce surpassed NFL legends Chris Carter and Marvin Harrison. He now ranks fifth on the all-time NFL receptions list.
The milestone catch happened in the fourth quarter, with a 19-yard pass from his quarterback Patrick Mahomes, also a close friend. It was Kelce’s longest catch of the game, prompting a victorious fist pump.
Kelce now trails behind Jerry Rice (1,549 receptions), Larry Fitzgerald (1,432), Tony Gonzalez (1,325), and Jason Witten (1,228) on the all-time list. He needs 446 more receptions to reach Rice’s record. Over his 12 previous seasons, Kelce has averaged 90 receptions per season. This makes breaking Rice’s record unlikely, but Witten’s total could be within reach.
Additionally, Kelce set another record on Sunday night. He now holds the record for the most receiving yards by a tight end in history, accumulating 15,420 yards in both the regular season and playoffs. Kelce surpassed former Chiefs star Tony Gonzalez’s record of 15,413 yards. With 11 weeks left in the season, Kelce is poised to increase this record further, making it increasingly challenging for future players to surpass.
