President Donald Trump recently returned from Beijing, highlighting improved trade relations with Chinese President Xi Jinping. However, a critical issue remains unsettled: Taiwan. Enes Kanter Freedom, former NBA player known for criticizing the Chinese Communist Party, emphasized Taiwan’s pivotal role in technology and security.
“Taiwan is central to the global technology race,” Freedom said. “Understanding the future of AI dominance, economic power, and national security requires understanding Taiwan.”
Freedom noted Taiwan’s importance in U.S. economic and security competition with China. He also pointed out President Trump’s consistent stance on maintaining peace through strength. “Stability in the Taiwan Strait needs strong American leadership and a strategic approach,” Freedom added.
Tensions remain as Taiwan seeks U.S. arms to defend against potential Chinese aggression. Trump has yet to announce a decision on a new Taiwan arms package. A White House official confirmed Trump’s past approval of $11.1 billion in arms sales to Taiwan, aligning with long-standing U.S. policy.
Trump’s visit included leading American tech CEOs, reflecting the U.S.-China competition over artificial intelligence, which affects both economic and geopolitical dynamics.
Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te described U.S. arms purchases as a crucial deterrent to regional conflict. “Security cooperation and arms sales are grounded in the Taiwan Relations Act,” Lai stated.
Freedom reiterated Taiwan’s significance to America’s economy and security, particularly regarding semiconductor production. Major companies, including Apple and Nvidia, rely on Taiwan’s semiconductor manufacturing. Ian Samson from Fidelity International referred to semiconductors as the ‘new oil,’ vital for economic activity and AI investment.
China has increased military activities near Taiwan. A Chinese spokesperson called Taiwan independence incompatible with peace and stressed the importance of stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Freedom plans to visit Taiwan this October to organize basketball camps. “I aim to document and share Taiwan’s vibrant, democratic society,” Freedom said. He also highlighted issues such as China’s genocide against Uyghurs and pressures on Hong Kongers, Tibetans, and Taiwanese people.
