President Donald Trump continues to exert a significant influence on the Republican political scene, according to Sen. John Kennedy from Louisiana. He highlighted the impact of Trump’s endorsement in the Louisiana Senate race, particularly in unseating incumbent Sen. Bill Cassidy. Kennedy commented, “Unless you’re God’s perfect idiot, the result was predictable.”
Sen. Cassidy had been struggling in the polls for over a year, and Trump’s support of Congresswoman Julia Letlow seemed to be pivotal in the race. Kennedy expressed respect for Cassidy’s decision to run despite the challenges.
Julia Letlow, who has represented Louisiana’s fifth district since 2021, secured about 45% of the vote, while Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming garnered approximately 28%. Cassidy came in third with just under 25%, leading to Letlow and Fleming advancing to a runoff since neither candidate reached 50% of the vote.
This victor will later face the winner of the Democratic runoff in the November elections. Cassidy, who voted to convict Trump in an impeachment trial over five years ago, had been targeted by Trump. The president labeled Cassidy in harsh terms, criticizing him as disloyal and detrimental to Louisiana.
Trump expressed satisfaction with Cassidy’s defeat, stating on social media that Cassidy’s political career is over. In his concession speech, Cassidy emphasized the importance of accepting democratic outcomes without complaints, despite the result.
While Trump’s endorsement played a role in Letlow’s success, Kennedy mentioned that voters were also frustrated with the state’s change from open to closed primaries. The legislative decision caused confusion, as voters needed to choose a primary to participate in.
Despite other contributing factors, Kennedy recognized Trump’s endorsement had a notable impact. Sen. Bill Cassidy had been facing political difficulties for quite some time, making the election outcome unsurprising after Trump’s involvement.
