President Donald Trump’s influence in Republican primaries faced a significant test on Tuesday in Michigan’s GOP gubernatorial race, and he emerged successful. Republican Rep. John James, who previously ran for the U.S. Senate, secured the GOP primary win over Perry Johnson, a wealthy businessman. James, endorsed by Trump in June, will compete against Democratic candidate Jocelyn Benson in the general election to replace term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
John James, a West Point graduate and Army Ranger, flew Apache helicopters during the Iraq war. He now faces a politically and financially intense election against Benson, Michigan’s Secretary of State.
“Nobody outworks a ranger,” James asserted, highlighting his leadership skills and dedication.
The Michigan GOP primary between James and Johnson was contentious. Johnson labeled James a “DEI candidate” and accused him of using racial politics, while James rebuffed Johnson’s remarks as “desperate.” Johnson spent a substantial amount from his own finances, yet James received backing from Trump, enhancing his campaign.
Notably, Trump’s endorsement throughout this year’s GOP primaries has been impactful. His favored candidates have emerged victorious against incumbents in states like Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, and Louisiana. However, not all went in his favor, as seen when Zach Lahn overcame Trump-endorsed Randy Feenstra in Iowa.
Trump-backed candidates experienced mixed success in places like Georgia and Alabama. Yet, in upstate New York, first-time candidate Anthony Constantino scored a win with Trump’s support. In South Carolina’s gubernatorial runoff, Trump’s backing of both Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and Attorney General Alan Wilson resulted in a win for Wilson.
Beyond these, in Louisiana, Trump’s influence was evident as Sen. Bill Cassidy, who had previously voted to convict Trump, lost his renomination bid. Instead, Julia Letlow, supported by Trump, claimed the nomination. Recently, Rep. Andy Biggs, another Trump-endorsed figure, won Arizona’s gubernatorial primary by a large margin.
