The U.S. Coast Guard recently thwarted a significant drug smuggling attempt, intercepting a boat off the coast of Puerto Rico carrying cocaine worth over $50 million.
Coast Guard officials confirmed the seizure of more than 7,000 pounds of cocaine from the vessel approximately 50 miles from the U.S. territory. This operation was aided by Customs and Border Protection air marine operations.
The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Richard Dixon played a crucial role in intercepting the suspected smuggling vessel on August 22, alongside Customs and Border Protection air assets.
Officials seized approximately 7,250 pounds of cocaine, valued at an estimated $54.5 million, as a result of the operation.
Five individuals aboard the suspected smuggling boat were detained and are being held in ongoing investigations.
Due to navigational concerns, the Coast Guard destroyed the intercepted boat. Lieutenant Commander Michael D. Torgesen praised the synchronized efforts between the Coast Guard and CBP for stopping this substantial illicit shipment.
The operation is an example of the government’s commitment to securing the Caribbean’s maritime borders against transnational smuggling activities.
Admiral Adam Chamie of the Coast Guard Southeast District emphasized the effectiveness of well-prepared crews and partnerships in achieving successful interdiction efforts in maritime operations.
No charges have been announced following the interception. This noteworthy bust follows another recent achievement – the offloading of 75,000 pounds of illegal narcotics worth $473 million in Miami, Florida.
