U.S. Navy’s New Long-Range Missile, ‘MALICE’, Enhances Air Defense

The U.S. Navy is advancing its capabilities with a new missile designed for substantial reach. The AIM-424 Long Range Air-to-Air Missile (LRAAM), nicknamed “MALICE,” is engineered to intercept enemy aircraft at great distances. Announced on August 22, this development aims to enhance the safety of American jets and carriers by neutralizing threats before they get close.

The AIM-424 LRAAM stands out due to its ability to be launched from far-off, targeting adversaries from extreme ranges and potentially improving the survival chances of U.S. pilots. This missile will empower American pilots to use radar detection to identify threats and engage them from considerable distances.

“LRAAM sustains the Department’s first look, first shot, first kill advantage,” the Navy stated. This weapon offers increased range, lethality, and combat effectiveness, crucial for Marine and Naval aviation forces.

The missile’s range exceeds 250 nautical miles, approximately 287 statute miles, marking a significant advancement in air-to-air missile technology. With a length of 13.5 feet and a weight of 1,500 pounds, the missile is larger and heavier than the AIM-120 AMRAAM, which weighs roughly 335 pounds. This size supports its powerful propulsion system, enabling it to reach targets over vast distances.

A blast-fragmentation warhead equips the missile, allowing it to detonate near a target and release fragments to ensure destruction, even without a direct hit. Furthermore, this missile fits various aircraft generations, including fourth and fifth-generation fighters, as well as forthcoming sixth-generation models.

The LRAAM is developed by Raytheon, a prominent U.S. defense contractor, solidifying its role in air defense innovation.
