Ukrainian Drones Strike St. Petersburg Amid Economic Forum

3 weeks ago 0

On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Ukrainian drones targeted an oil terminal in St. Petersburg, Russia. The strike resulted in large plumes of black smoke rising over the city’s port. This occurred as the Russian city hosted an international economic forum, touted by President Vladimir Putin.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the drones flew over 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) to reach their target. Russian authorities mentioned the attack aimed at the city’s infrastructure but provided no further details. The airport in St. Petersburg temporarily halted flights due to the drone strike, and mobile internet services were also disrupted.

Despite the current tensions, Putin plans to speak at the economic forum on Friday. While the Kremlin sees the event as prestigious, many Western investors and officials have avoided participation since Russia initiated military aggression against Ukraine over four years ago. This year, Saudi Arabia is attending as a special guest, sending a significant business delegation.

The drone strikes present a challenge for Putin, who recently scaled back the annual Victory Day parade in Moscow amid concerns over potential Ukrainian attacks. The strikes follow a large-scale missile and drone assault by Russian forces on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, resulting in at least 22 civilian deaths and 138 injuries. Russia’s continuous attacks signify its readiness to intensify aggressions.

With front line changes being minimal, both nations are increasingly resorting to long-range tactics. Ukraine aims to cripple Russia’s oil infrastructure, a major revenue source for Moscow, and disrupt its weapons production. Consequently, Ukrainian forces have repeatedly targeted oil facilities in and around St. Petersburg.

Beyond St. Petersburg, other attacks included hitting the Kronstadt naval base, a historic site for Russia’s Baltic Fleet, and a defense production facility in Russia’s Tambov region, located 600 kilometers (370 miles) from Ukraine.

Russia’s Defense Ministry reported shooting down 354 Ukrainian drones overnight. Yet, Ukrainian forces continue their efforts. In Ukraine’s Russian-controlled Donetsk region, a Ukrainian strike on a bus from Moscow to Crimea resulted in seven fatalities and 11 injuries, as reported by Denis Pushilin, the Kremlin-appointed leader of Donetsk.

In the Smolensk region, Ukrainian drones claimed the lives of two firefighters, with injuries to two more firefighters and a local resident, as per regional governor Vasily Anokhin.

In retaliation, Russia launched 198 long-range drones at Ukraine overnight. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 189 of them according to the Ukrainian air force. In Sumy, Ukraine’s northern region, one citizen was killed, and 15 were injured — three of whom were children — due to Russian strikes in the past 24 hours.

The situation in Kherson is similarly dire, with Russian overnight operations claiming the life of an 86-year-old woman and injuring five others, reported by regional authorities.
