Uncertain Futures for Returning NFL Players at Alabama

As NFL players consider returning to college, programs face new decisions. The Alabama Crimson Tide is among them. Coach Kalen DeBoer mentioned the possibility of a former player’s return to the roster. This, however, doesn’t appear imminent.

DeBoer explained, “Overall, in general, kind of how that works, [athletic director] Greg Byrne communicated with me and us about just what you can and can’t do.” Fox54 News Huntsville aired this statement. He acknowledged the potential return of a past roster member. Yet, this player isn’t currently eligible to play.

This scenario stems from a court case impacting the 2022 recruiting class, which received an extra year of NCAA eligibility. However, a stay was placed on this ruling. Some players, like Thomas Castellanos from Florida State, are transferring to other schools with individual rulings.

DeBoer did not specify which player from the 2022 class might benefit. The discussion then moved on from this matter. NFL players like Jihaad Campbell, Ty Simpson, and Tyler Booker remain with their teams. Yet, wide receiver Kobe Prentice, recently cut by the New England Patriots, might return to Alabama. Similarly, running back Jam Miller could be an option to cover injuries.

Much is still unclear, as this new collegiate landscape is evolving. DeBoer admitted there isn’t a clear idea of how events will unfold. “Just got to see how things move forward and progress,” he expressed. Situations may change daily, and officials at different levels are working to establish guidelines for schools.

In this changing environment, the return of familiar faces to Alabama remains a possibility.
