Unexpected Collaboration: Audemars Piguet and Swatch Launch ‘Royal Pop’

1 month ago 0

Watch collectors are familiar with the term ‘Holy Trinity’, referring to three of the watch industry’s most prestigious brands: Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet. These brands are renowned for their legacy, quality, and craftsmanship. Naturally, any new release from them garners significant attention.

Thus, the announcement of a collaboration between Audemars Piguet and Swatch was surprising. Audemars Piguet, famed for the Royal Oak designed by Gerald Genta, is highly coveted among collectors. These watches are so sought after that acquiring one often necessitates a personal connection with a boutique. On the other hand, Swatch is known for making affordable watches despite owning high-end brands like Breguet and Omega.

Despite the contrast, the collaboration named ‘Royal Pop’ was unveiled in early May. Diverging from the typical subdued stainless steel design, the Royal Pop features vibrant bioceramic cases and adopts a pocket watch style with a lanyard. Priced between $400 and $425, this unique offering attracted considerable interest ahead of its release on May 16.

The demand for the Royal Pop countered claims about economic difficulties in the U.S. On release day, large crowds gathered, some arriving days in advance. Swatch’s response included closing several stores due to safety concerns following reports of unruly crowds.

In Long Island, New York, shopper chaos at the Roosevelt Field Mall led to police intervention. A video captured officers using pepper spray to manage the crowd as reported by the New York Post, resulting in four arrests.

Many eager buyers aimed to resell the Royal Pop, with listings on platforms like eBay priced between $1,600 and $2,000. Despite conversations about economic struggles, substantial numbers of people willingly queued up for watches, or paid significantly more than the retail price for a watch that lacks traditional wristwear options.

The AP x Swatch ‘Royal Pop’ offers collectors a rare tie to the Holy Trinity at a fraction of typical costs, presenting what some consider a bargain. The project’s popularity challenges perceptions of economic hardship, as it seems plenty remain ready to invest in luxury goods.
