USA’s Folarin Balogun Cleared to Play Against Belgium

USA’s World Cup star Folarin Balogun will be eligible to play in the Round of 16 match against Belgium on Monday. This follows controversy after receiving a red card in the Round of 32 against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Balogun stepped on defender Tarik Muharemovic’s foot, prompting a red card after a VAR review by referee Raphael Claus. Initially, it appeared he committed a severe foul.

The judicial body may decide to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure, a FIFA disciplinary code section states. It further warns that any similar offense within a probation period could immediately reinstate the sanction.

The Athletic first confirmed Balogun’s status for the game. FOX Sports later verified that he is cleared to play and noted that the initial incident should not have been flagged to Claus.

FIFA confirmed that the suspension is suspended for one year. U.S. Soccer stated, “We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow.” They look forward to the game against Belgium and appreciate the fans’ continued support.

Balogun, who scored in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, expressed his thoughts on the red card incident on Friday. First and foremost, it was totally unintentional. The decision was the referee’s choice, but I think a yellow card would have been fair due to it not being intentional, he said.

He shared, There’s been lots of different emotions. I’ve been upset, I’ve been happy, it’s been surreal to be honest. But for me it was just important to stay calm. We’re inspiring little kids, boys and girls, watching us. We have to show them the correct way to handle things even when it’s unjust, reinforcing his focus on setting a positive example.

U.S. Soccer had no option to appeal the ruling. Article 9.6 of the 2026 World Cup regulations clarifies that referees’ decisions regarding play-related facts are final. Article 10.5 adds that red cards, either direct or from a second caution, result in automatic suspension from the next match.
