Vance Criticizes Supreme Court’s Birthright Citizenship Decision

Vice President JD Vance expressed strong disapproval of the Supreme Court’s decision on birthright citizenship. He voiced his concerns during an interview on ‘The Ingraham Angle’. Vance described the judicial ruling as ‘atrocious’, warning it might encourage misuse of the immigration system.

The Supreme Court had recently ruled against former President Donald Trump’s attempt to abolish birthright citizenship. This decision affirms that the Constitution guarantees automatic American citizenship for most individuals born in the U.S.

Vance stated, ‘This is a very disappointing ruling from the Supreme Court. Of course, we respect it, but we also think that it was a major, major mistake.’ He further explained that people might exploit this decision by arriving on short visits, giving birth, and securing American citizenship for their children.

The Supreme Court’s decision preserves the 14th Amendment’s birthright citizenship guarantee, affecting children born in the U.S. regardless of their parents’ immigration status. This aligns with the Trump administration’s opposition.

Despite his criticism, Vance recognized a potential advantage. He suggested the narrow court opinion indicates a vulnerability in the concept of birthright citizenship, which he considers inconsistent with the 14th Amendment.

Vance shared, ‘A lot of legal experts expected this case to go the wrong direction by 7–2, or even 8–1.’ He emphasized that the decision highlights the fragility of birthright citizenship’s legal standing.

Vance asserted that birthright citizenship, a constitutional right for over 150 years, encourages illegal immigration by allowing unauthorized entries to gain citizenship for their children.

He remarked, ‘I hate to call it birthright citizenship. It’s fundamentally a loophole in our immigration system rewarding illegal aliens simply due to childbirth in the U.S.’

The administration is exploring options to counter the Supreme Court’s ruling. Proposed measures include restrictions in U.S. territories like the Northern Mariana Islands.

Senior officials have expressed concerns about ‘birth tourism,’ notably involving instances where individuals from China give birth on these islands to secure U.S. citizenship for their offspring.

Vance concluded by stating, ‘We have an opportunity to reverse this decision and similar unfavorable ones. We must improve our immigration system and scrutinize who enters our country to avoid benefits from this Supreme Court ruling.’
