Violence Erupts in Southampton Following Murder Case

In Southampton, southern England, a protest turned violent on Tuesday night, resulting in injuries to eleven police officers. Demonstrators attacked them using rocks and garbage cans. A British cabinet minister described these scenes as “unacceptable.”

The unrest followed the release of footage on Monday evening. The video showed officers handcuffing murder victim Henry Nowak, as his attacker looked on last December. It sparked claims from right-wing commentators and politicians accusing the British police of bias against white people.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside Southampton’s main police station. The crowd then tried to enter the street where the killer’s family resides. They clashed with officers blocking the road and also attacked elsewhere in the city. Videos reveal protesters throwing rocks, flares, and garbage cans at officers. Some demonstrators were seen draped in the British flag, punching and kicking at police shields.

British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who oversees policing, condemned the violence. She declared the events “completely unacceptable” and warned that those involved would “face the full force of the law.” She also praised the police for their “great bravery and calm” in managing the situation.
