Virginia Democrat Challenges FBI Surveillance Amid Corruption Probe

2 hours ago 0

Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, D-Va., recently announced that the FBI and the Justice Department have been monitoring his phone calls. The surveillance included his conversations with Virginia state Sen. Louise Lucas. Subramanyam, a first-term congressman who previously served in the Virginia Senate, stated that he was informed of this surveillance by the agencies. The monitoring was conducted as part of a corruption investigation involving Lucas.

This is deeply concerning, Subramanyam said in his statement. He criticized the Department of Justice during Trump’s administration, claiming it has become a tool for Trump’s personal grievances. He expressed suspicion regarding the timing of the investigation, noting it coincided with the state’s vote on a new Democratic-drawn congressional map. This event also saw a subsequent court ruling.

The documents associated with Subramanyam’s statement indicate his conversations with Lucas were monitored from March 6 to April 5 and later from April 14 to May 14. On April 21, Virginia voters narrowly approved the new congressional map, but the state’s Supreme Court blocked its implementation on May 8. Both the FBI and Justice Department declined to comment on the issue.
