Vita Vea Requests Trade Amid Contract Extension Stalemate

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea, a two-time Pro Bowler, has requested a trade. Vea played a key role in the Bucs’ 2021 Super Bowl victory. The trade request follows stalled contract extension talks. He is in the last year of his four-year, $71 million deal, signed in 2022, and had been seeking an extension throughout the offseason.

Originally from California, Vea has been linked to several West Coast NFL teams. These include the San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Los Angeles Rams. Rams head coach Sean McVay responded to the speculation, commenting, “He’s a stud. I think that he is a great player that’s always been a problem to game plan against, but I think we feel good about our group right now,” during the “Up & Adams” show.

Despite McVay’s remarks, the Rams are making aggressive moves for a Super Bowl push. They recently acquired Myles Garrett, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, who set a league record with 23 sacks in 17 games. The team’s strategy includes veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford and a potential contract extension for All-Pro receiver Puka Nacua, which may affect market dynamics. The Rams have also been linked with interests in bringing back Aaron Donald, indicating their openness to strengthening their defensive lineup further.

Vea, currently 31 years old, comes off a challenging season. During the last year, he recorded 34 combined tackles, seven tackles for loss, 13 quarterback hits, 4.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery over 17 games. He has maintained consistency, achieving four or more sacks for five consecutive seasons. His Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade was 70.2, ranking 20th among tackles last year. Additionally, Vea produced 51 total pressures, the seventh highest in the NFL.

If added to the Rams’ roster featuring Garrett, Kobie Turner, Byron Young, Braden Fiske, Omar Speights, and Nate Landman, Vea could significantly bolster their defensive front. The Rams must evaluate what they can offer in a trade and address Vea’s desire for a long-term contract.
