Washington Wildfires Leave Devastation in Spokane

Residents in eastern Washington returned to find destroyed neighborhoods after wildfires swept through areas around Spokane. These wildfires, among the most damaging in the state’s history, left some homes with only chimneys standing.

Approximately 700 buildings were destroyed, and evacuation orders affected around 67,000 people. The fires covered about 12.5 square miles, filling the sky with smoke. Cooler conditions helped firefighters, but dry, hot weather was expected to return.

In one neighborhood, charred vehicles and twisted remains highlighted the destruction. Across the street, some homes avoided damage as residents used hoses to protect their property.

The devastation feels like a war zone, leaving nothing to salvage, said Miriam Sim, who, with her husband Daniel, had lived in their now-destroyed home since 2005.

By Monday, the Spokane County Sheriff reported clearing nearly all missing persons reports, initially numbering around 300, indicating most were safe. The fires, yet uncontained according to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, stretched resources across the western U.S.

Flyers warned against drone flights near burn areas to avoid delaying firefighting efforts.

Angela and Wayde Deatherage evacuated with few belongings, shortly receiving confirmation from a security camera that their home had been consumed by fire. Returning, they found only ash but managed to salvage a neighbor’s house with a hose.

Online appeals for aid emerged as families, like Kory and MacKensie Aspaas, faced total loss.

The disaster necessitated evacuations from Spokane’s Veterans Affairs hospital and kept investigators seeking the fire’s origin.

Elsewhere, significant fires continued in Idaho, Oregon, and Utah, causing evacuations and threatening homes and livestock. Spokane responded by offering shelter at the city’s convention center and setting up drop-in camps for children.

Additional fires burned less populated areas northwest of Spokane.
