Victor Wembanyama shouldered full responsibility for the San Antonio Spurs’ loss in Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Friday night. This defeat places the Spurs among the three NBA teams to lose both opening Finals games at home. The dramatic game ended with a narrow loss to the New York Knicks, 105-104, after a sequence that Wembanyama won’t soon forget.
The Spurs experienced both a thrilling comeback and a disappointing collapse in the fourth quarter. San Antonio fell behind by 14 points midway through the final period after losing a double-digit lead. The team then mounted a 14-0 run, bringing the game to a tie, and briefly took the lead when Wembanyama completed a three-point play with less than a minute remaining.
The game was tied with about 14 seconds left, showcasing the clash of the best players. Jalen Brunson of the Knicks attempted a jumper from 16 feet but missed. Wembanyama, securing the rebound, attempted a pass to teammate Stephon Castle. However, Castle was not prepared, causing the pass to bounce off his back. As Brunson regained control of the ball, Wembanyama fouled him, sending the Knicks player to the free-throw line.
“I need to have more poise, more control over the game,” said Wembanyama. Brunson missed one free throw, leaving the Knicks ahead by just one point. Wembanyama took a final shot for the win but missed, leading to the Knicks securing a 2-0 series advantage.
“I threw that one away. I messed up,” Wembanyama admitted. “We didn’t play great as a team. We needed to win that game. This game was ours. But at this point, it’s done. Am I going to regret it? Yes, of course. Am I going to use that to fuel me and fuel us in the next game? Absolutely.” Wembanyama also noted his emotions were perhaps too heightened following the team’s Western Conference Finals victory over Oklahoma City Thunder.
Now the Knicks gain momentum with Madison Square Garden set to host its first NBA Finals game this millennium. Game 3 on Monday night is projected to be a costly event, with ticket prices on the secondary market reaching around $12,000.
The Spurs join the 1993 Phoenix Suns and 1995 Orlando Magic, who similarly went down 2-0 at home in the Finals and were unable to capture the title.
