Whitmer Endorses Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic Senate Primary

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has endorsed Representative Haley Stevens ahead of the state’s U.S. Senate Democratic primary. Stevens, known for her centrist stance, and progressive candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed are leading the race as early voting begins.

Whitmer’s support may significantly benefit Stevens, especially given the governor’s strong electoral success in Michigan. During her appearance at a Teamsters hall in Detroit, accompanied by South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn, Whitmer expressed confidence in Stevens, stating, “Michiganders need a fighter in Washington and there are few leaders with more fight in ’em than Haley Stevens.”

Stevens, who turned a Republican House seat in 2018, also enjoys backing from Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Michigan Senator Gary Peters, who is retiring. Meanwhile, Senators Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are rallying behind El-Sayed.

A spokesperson for El-Sayed voiced the candidate’s stance, stating, “The corporate establishment has closed ranks and made their pick – now, Michigan voters will get to make theirs.”

The primary is set for August 4, with the winner facing Republican former Representative Mike Rogers in November. Holding Michigan is crucial for Democrats aiming to gain control of the U.S. Senate from its current narrow Republican lead.
