Wyndham Clark Silences Critics to Secure U.S. Open Victory

2 days ago 0

Wyndham Clark faced constant heckling from the Shinnecock Hills crowd during his path to victory. As fans shouted for his ball to land in unfortunate spots, the tension was palpable. One particularly vocal fan was removed after taunting him with cries of, “Don’t choke, Wyndham!” The pressure was immense, yet Clark managed to deliver a decisive 52-foot putt that secured his second U.S. Open title in four years. This triumph prevented what could have been the worst collapse in tournament history, as his initial six-stroke lead dwindled to just one. The crowd’s preference was evident; they were eager to cheer for Scottie Scheffler, who was in pursuit of a career Grand Slam, or Sam Burns, who narrowly missed the victory by a single stroke.

Clark’s previous actions, such as damaging a locker at Oakmont Country Club after missing the cut last year, were not forgotten. His controversial remarks regarding the Masters Par 3 Contest were also fresh in memory. The crowd seemed ready for drama during Father’s Day at Shinnecock, as Clark led comfortably over fan favorites Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler. “Man, they definitely didn’t want me to win,” Clark remarked.

Clark expressed frustration over fans leaving before he finished his third round on Saturday. On Sunday, however, he might have preferred their absence. Rarely do golfers leading major championships face such hostility. Similar sentiment was directed at McIlroy during the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black. The support for Scheffler pushed Clark into an “underdog” mindset. Replacing negative comments with positive affirmations, Clark admitted, “Some of it’s self-deserved. I kind of brought it on myself.” Scheffler had a strong backing, chasing the elusive career Grand Slam. Clark faltered early in the round with bogeys on holes two, six, and seven as the crowd rallied behind Scheffler.

The fans would cheer Clark’s errors and shower Scheffler with affection, celebrating his 30th birthday with renditions of “Happy Birthday.” On the fourth hole, Clark’s shot ending under trash containers received cheers. Similarly, after his seventh-hole shot landed in a bunker, a spectator proclaimed, “Wyndham gonna lose ’em,” while another yelled,”Get in the fescue!” The atmosphere showed a clear bias towards Scheffler.

Clark briefly won the crowd over with a sensational 24-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole, leading him to 5-under par. As hopes of an alternate winner faded, heckling resumed when he backed off his 8-foot par putt and subsequently missed it on the 17th. Walking to the 18th tee, with disbelief evident, a fan humorously sang “Under Pressure.”

Despite the adversity, Clark expressed pride in his perseverance, “I battled through. I mean, things really could have gotten away from me. I stood tough.” He reflected on the victory’s significance, emphasizing that winning was what mattered most.
