Xavier Becerra, a Democrat, managed to secure a position for the upcoming November election following a strong performance in this week’s primary, as determined by The Associated Press on Friday. Although initially overlooked in the race, Becerra’s chances improved significantly after the unexpected withdrawal of Eric Swalwell.
Steve Hilton, a Republican and former Fox News host, and Tom Steyer, a Democrat and former hedge fund manager, are both competing closely for the second spot. As election officials continue to tally millions of votes, the uncertainty remains. California’s nonpartisan primary system dictates that the top two finishers, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the November election.
Becerra’s success in the primary, where he outperformed expectations, marks a significant comeback in a competitive race. His campaign positions him as a potential first Latino governor of modern California if he wins in November. Voters in interviews highlighted Becerra’s extensive governmental experience, setting him apart in a crowded field of less seasoned rivals.
Republican voters gave Hilton an early lead by submitting their ballots well before Election Day. Conversely, many Democrats delayed their voting until the final week, seeking more clarity amidst a diverse roster of candidates.
The race was officially called on Friday when Becerra surpassed Hilton to claim the leading position in ongoing vote counts. There remains uncertainty about Hilton’s ability to hold off Steyer, who has gained momentum since Election Day but remains a strong third contender.
If pitted against Hilton in the general election, Becerra would be a heavy favorite. No Republican has managed to win a statewide election in California since 2006. Hilton’s support from President Trump, who is unpopular in the state, might further affect his chances.
