The New York Yankees faced a tough conclusion to their season on Wednesday night. They were swept on their home field by the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series. The Yankees lost 4-3 in the final game, but a controversial moment may have changed the outcome.
In the sixth inning, with George Lombard on first base and two outs, Anthony Volpe hit a fly ball into left field. Initially, it was called a game-tying home run, but replay review overturned it to an RBI double. A fan had reached over the wall, causing interference. The fan was later removed from the stadium. The Yankees couldn’t capitalize, as Spencer Jones struck out to end the threat, and they did not score again.
The ball would not have left the playing field nor would it have been caught.
MLB’s Replay Center confirmed the decision, stating that the spectator interfered over the field of play. This decision was made despite MLB’s Statcast suggesting there was a chance the ball could have been a home run in some ballparks, including Yankee Stadium. Statcast showed that Volpe hit the ball 357 feet with an exit velocity of 97.9 mph and a 42-degree launch angle. Initially, Yankee Stadium was listed as one where the ball could have been a home run. However, this was later revised.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone supported the umpires’ decision, noting he felt uncertain initially, but upon replay, he agreed with the call. When he hit it, to my eye looking out there, I was a little concerned right away,
Boone said. Anthony Volpe commented on the situation, expressing hope for a positive outcome despite the crazy turn of events.
The incident raises questions about fan interference and its impact on crucial games. While no one can say for sure if Volpe’s ball would have resulted in a home run, the interference undoubtedly left the Yankees questioning what might have been.
