A recent trend in Hollywood shows YouTube stars turning their online success into box office hits. The film Backrooms, a psychological horror produced by A24 and directed by Kane Parsons, exemplifies this shift. The movie hit 3,400 theaters across the United States and Canada on Thursday.
Kane Parsons, a 20-year-old first-time filmmaker, gained attention from his YouTube channel, accumulating 342 million views. Industry analysts project that Backrooms will earn over $60 million by the weekend’s end. For comparison, Steven Spielberg’s upcoming science-fiction film, Disclosure Day, might open with $35 million, though it had a much larger budget of $115 million.
Backrooms stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, known for his role in 12 Years a Slave, and Renate Reinsve of Sentimental Value. The film cost about $10 million to produce. Its success underscores a broader movement, with directors honing their crafts outside traditional Hollywood paths.
Stephen Galloway, from Chapman University’s film school, noted this shift. He commented that these creators represent a new wave in filmmaking. Besides Parsons, other directors like Curry Barker and Mark Fischbach have translated their online presence into box office success this year.
Obsession, a film by Curry Barker, is particularly noteworthy. The horror-comedy has earned $74 million in North America since its debut. Made for $750,000, the film lacks famous names but has captivated audiences. Analysts believe it may reach $100 million before its theatrical run ends.
