President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine recently issued an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, following a series of Ukrainian drone strikes in Russia and battlefield successes for Ukraine. The letter, published last Thursday, extended an offer to resume peace talks. However, it also criticized Putin for wartime failures, economic challenges, and closer ties with China. Zelensky highlighted Putin’s growing age in his message.
Zelensky has repeatedly addressed Putin and the Russian populace through video messages since the start of the conflict in 2022. This recent letter stands out as one of his most directly critical communications to Putin.
“After 26 years in power, age is beginning to take its toll,” Zelensky commented on Putin’s situation, referencing recent actions affecting St. Petersburg.
Zelensky pointed out that Putin has spent nearly half of his 26 years in power involved in conflicts with Ukraine. This timeline includes Russia’s military intervention in eastern Ukraine beginning in 2014 and the full-scale invasion that started in 2022.
Offering a potential cease-fire, Zelensky proposed meeting for direct talks with Putin, outside the context of the halted negotiations previously overseen by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner during the Trump administration. These talks stalled due to the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran initiated in February.
Zelensky suggested involving European countries and convening a summit in neutral locations like Switzerland, Turkey, or an Arab nation. Despite past offers to meet personally with Putin, such meetings have yet to occur.
