Reality television figure Spencer Pratt looks poised to clear an important hurdle in the race for Mayor of Los Angeles. He aims to unseat current Mayor Karen Bass this November.
Incumbent Mayor Faces Runoff
Bass, who took office in 2022, didn’t secure a majority in the primary election. This forces a runoff election as no candidate surpassed 50% of the vote. Being endorsed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris, Bass still faces this challenge. Her leadership through ongoing issues like wildfire responses becomes a focal point of criticism.
Primary Election Results
Spencer Pratt, known for MTV’s “The Hills,” was in second place following the primary. His aggressive stance against Bass on issues like fire recovery, homelessness, and crime has gained traction. Pratt accuses Bass of accountability for wildfires that destroyed thousands of structures, including his own home.
Challenges from Within
Nithya Raman, a Bass ally turned opponent, trails Pratt and Bass. Raman, aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America, pushes for a more progressive city approach. While lagging in results, Raman has not conceded defeat.
Pratt’s Political Path
Pratt, a Republican, faces challenges in a heavily Democratic city where less than 20% identify as GOP. Although the mayoral contest is nonpartisan, party sentiments influence voter attitudes.
Voter Sentiments
Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., credits Pratt’s rise to voter dissatisfaction with Bass’ leadership. Pratt appeals to Democrats disillusioned with ongoing issues in the city. However, Bass defends her leadership, citing reduced homelessness, increased housing, and a growing police force on her website.
With the runoff ahead, the race remains open and competitive.
