Sen. Cory Booker Criticizes Trump’s Iran Memorandum

2 days ago 0

Senator Cory Booker, representing New Jersey, criticized President Donald Trump’s new Iran memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Sunday, calling the agreement a complete surrender and labeling Trump as the largest global loser following the conclusion of the conflict with Tehran.

Booker asserted that Trump did not deserve recognition for seeking to end a war which Democrats accused him of mishandling from the outset. He remarked on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” “They know they have won, and they see Donald Trump as the biggest loser on the global stage right now.”

During the show, NBC’s Garrett Haake questioned Booker about reports from NBC News indicating U.S. intelligence officials warned that Israel might act to destabilize the developing agreement. Booker described both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as failed leaders, stating, “Both of these leaders are disruptive to potential paths to peace in the Middle East.”

Booker highlighted that he voted eight times to conclude the war, characterizing the memorandum of understanding as rewarding Iran and leaving the U.S. with fewer options. He stated, “I do not endorse this deal. It’s an abject surrender.”

Discussing the economic implications, Booker added that Iran benefits greatly, while American resources are seemingly directed to aiding Iran’s reconstruction efforts.

He criticized Trump for losing U.S. leverage and not achieving the ambitions set at the conflict’s inception, saying, “Leadership is required, yet our allies express concerns over the President’s dangerous actions.”

A debate ensued on the program regarding whether Trump’s Iran memorandum concluded the war or was overly advantageous to Tehran.

James Carville, a Democratic strategist, argued Trump deserves acknowledgment for preventing further escalation. Booker refuted this, comparing such credit to honoring an arsonist fleeing their own fire.

Booker also directed criticism at Congressional Republicans for permitting Trump to conduct the war without adequate resistance from its start.

The White House, through spokeswoman Olivia Wales, countered Booker’s remarks, highlighting the supposed benefits achieved by Trump’s negotiating team, such as reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lowering energy prices.
