Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont recently confronted towel-clad Republican staffers outside the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s (DSCC) headquarters. The staffers were mocking a scandal involving Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. A video shared by Fox News Digital captured the incident where staff members from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) dressed in towels to satirize a sexually suggestive Kik profile photo of Platner, showing him shirtless with a towel around his waist.
One of the protesters questioned Sanders outside the DSCC headquarters in Washington, D.C., asking if he supported Platner despite Platner’s Kik profile. The headquarters was a meeting point for Platner and other Democrats ahead of his primary on June 9. The Republican protesters brandished signs targeting Platner amid scrutiny over his Kik profile, Nazi-linked tattoo, and sexting scandals.
Platner’s campaign faces numerous controversies. These include a tattoo identified as a Nazi symbol, offensive Reddit posts blaming rape victims, racial stereotypes, mocking a Purple Heart veteran, and encouraging political violence. Additionally, Platner was reported to have exchanged sexually explicit text messages during his marriage and maintained an active Kik profile with a shirtless mirror selfie.
Kik, an anonymous messaging app, has been linked to child exploitation cases and criticized by child-safety groups as a “predator’s paradise.” Protesters chanted “Platner is a creep!” and “Delete your Kik!” while displaying signs like “PEDO PLATNER MESSAGED KIDS.” Republican staffers dressed in towels protested outside the DSCC, imitating Platner’s reported Kik photo.
Senator Sanders responded to queries about Platner’s Kik account by questioning the morality and corruption linked to President Trump. Sanders pointed at the protesters, accusing them of hypocrisy regarding moral standards.
Although Fox News Digital found no evidence of Platner communicating with minors on Kik, the controversy focuses on the app’s child-safety reputation, the suggestive profile photo, and reports of Platner’s explicit messages with women.
Platner and Sanders were seen together during a tour stop at the University of Maine campus in Orono on May 24, 2026. Platner disputed parts of the reports about his personal life, while his wife criticized the exposure of private marital details. He apologized for past online comments and claimed to have obtained the tattoo years ago, unaware of its Nazi associations.
The confrontation at the DSCC highlighted Republican efforts to leverage Platner’s scandals against national Democrats, including Sanders, ahead of Maine’s June 9 Democratic Senate primary.
