Australia’s Largest Seizure of Exotic Cockroaches

3 weeks ago 0

In a significant seizure, Australian authorities confiscated over 100,000 exotic cockroaches from a breeder in Bathurst, New South Wales. This represents the country’s largest-ever seizure of illegal invertebrates. The collection, comprising Madagascar hissing and dubia cockroaches, is valued at 200,000 Australian dollars (approximately $142,000).

According to the Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water, these cockroaches were seized in May. The Madagascar hissing cockroach is notably large, reaching lengths of 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 centimeters). Images shared by the department depict these shiny brown invertebrates as bigger than a human finger.

Australia’s native cockroach species are smaller, typically ranging from 0.9 to 1.4 inches (2.3 to 3.6 centimeters). The country’s subtropical climate supports a diverse range of cockroach species. Stefanie Lesser, a Bathurst snake catcher, suggested that the seized exotic species were sold as an economical choice for reptile feed due to their larger size, which reduces the number needed. The authorities recommend using crickets or wood roaches as alternatives for feeding reptiles.

The importation, breeding, or sale of both Madagascar hissing and dubia cockroaches is strictly prohibited in Australia given the stringent biosecurity measures. This is to protect agricultural and horticultural industries as well as native wildlife. Transporting illegal animals, insects, or plant material into the country can result in hefty fines.

The department’s statement emphasized that exotic cockroaches have not undergone environmental risk assessments, posing potential threats such as disease spread or harm to indigenous species. The department warned of potential legal actions against possession of these invertebrates.

In this instance, charges were not pursued against the Bathurst breeder. The confiscated cockroaches are set to be euthanized.
