Conflict Continues Despite Ceasefire Efforts
On Friday, fighting between Israel and Hezbollah persisted, following the latter’s rejection of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement. Israeli forces intensified their military operations across southern Lebanon, further escalating tensions.
Ceasefire Agreement and its Challenges
The ceasefire deal, negotiated directly between Israel and Lebanon in Washington, requires Hezbollah to halt its attacks and withdraw from the border region. However, Hezbollah, backed by Iran but not part of the talks, dismissed these conditions as tantamount to surrender.
Lebanese authorities report that over one million civilians have been displaced since the conflict began in March. With the faltering ceasefire agreement, many await clear directions on returning home.
Evacuation Orders and Ground Reality
Israel continues issuing evacuation directives, including to Anqoun, a town previously spared similar orders. Reports indicate Anqoun had been sheltering about 2,500 displaced individuals, who were forced to relocate again.
Hezbollah’s leader, Naim Qassem, condemned the ceasefire terms as a humiliating attempt to impose Israel’s will on Lebanon without comprehensive conditions, such as Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories in southern Lebanon.
Political and Regional Implications
Israel’s defense minister, Israel Katz, affirmed military operations will persist despite ceasefire discussions, delaying the return of displaced individuals.
This ongoing unrest complicates the U.S. administration’s efforts in negotiating with Iran, Hezbollah’s main supporter, which threatens to withdraw from peace talks if Israeli attacks persist.
