Peru’s Presidential Election: Fujimori vs. Sánchez

3 weeks ago 0

Peruvian voters are preparing to elect a new president, facing a tight race between Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sánchez. Polls had Keiko slightly ahead, though about 25% of voters remain undecided. Recent reports suggest Sánchez may have gained ground.

Keiko Fujimori, known for her father’s controversial legacy, has been a familiar face in Peru’s political scene. Alberto Fujimori, her late father, is remembered both for economic reforms and violent actions during his presidency, which include human rights violations and corruption. Political scientist Paula Távara warns of an authoritarian approach if Keiko wins.

If elected, Fujimori promises to tackle crime with her father’s tough policies. Despite past election defeats, she persists, although many criticize her resistance to past losses and her role in political instability.

Roberto Sánchez offers an alternative, though he faces scrutiny for past associations with Pedro Castillo, whose presidency ended amid controversy. While Sánchez has shifted towards more moderate economic policies, skepticism remains due to his ties with radical figures.

The election result could take time, especially if the race remains close. Peru awaits the outcome as polls close in the evening.
