Clashes Outside New Jersey Detention Center
Law enforcement and protesters clashed outside Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, New Jersey. Video footage shared on social media shows agents clearing demonstrators from the facility entrance, with officers arriving in several police vehicles. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) commented on social media, warning protestors that disruptions would not deter their efforts.
Protests at the center, a focal point against Trump’s immigration policies, have intensified. Advocates report detainee hunger strikes over poor conditions, a claim the federal government denies.
Protester Struck by Vehicle
During the protests, a video surfaced of a protestor being hit by a vehicle leaving the center. The footage shows demonstrators attempting to block vehicles, with one person assisted after falling. Observers noted vehicles forced their way out after a prolonged standoff with law enforcement.
Governor’s Commitment to Legal Defense
Governor Mike Sherill of New Jersey announced $20 million funding for legal defenses against deportation. The initiative, which saw a $12 million increase, supports low-income families, including those at Delaney Hall. Sherill emphasized the importance of legal representation, especially amid the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
A new Rapid Legal Response Initiative will further bolster emergency legal defenses and support challenges to federal immigration enforcement across the state.
Police Officer Charged with Theft
A New Jersey police sergeant, Darryl Brown, is charged with stealing $10,000 worth of equipment from a photojournalist injured at a protest. The journalist, Angelina Katsanis, identified her missing gear using a tracker, leading to Brown’s home.
After a review showed Brown interacting with the gear, a search revealed missing items, carrying Katsanis’ details. Brown faces theft charges and has been suspended without pay.
