An 86-year-old woman from West Virginia recently fulfilled a longtime dream when a Taco Bell opened in her hometown. Known locally as the ‘Taco Bell Queen,’ she had hoped for years for the fast-food chain to establish a branch in her small town near Charleston.
Pauline Ferrell Monk expressed her excitement when informed by her son that a Taco Bell would finally be opening in Sissonville. Her son, who had been instrumental in bringing the restaurant to town, promised her it would happen.
Monk was faced with unfortunate news around the same time. After feeling unwell with a virus, medical tests revealed she had stage 4 cancer. Doctors informed Monk she had only a few months left to live. Despite the diagnosis, she hoped to see the new Taco Bell open.
During the construction phase, Monk often wondered if she would witness the restaurant’s grand opening. She drove past the site, asking if she would live long enough to enjoy it.
When the Taco Bell construction neared completion, her son ensured Monk had a special early entrance on opening day. As her son was to cut the ribbon, she joined him for the celebration.
The event transformed Monk into an Internet sensation and a local legend. The gathered crowd hailed her as the ‘Taco Bell Queen,’ a title she happily embraced.
Monk shared her favorite Taco Bell orders, mentioning she enjoys a Nachos BellGrande or chicken quesadilla, followed by cinnamon twists for dessert. While the story of Taco Bell brought joy and attention, it is only a part of her life.
Monk describes her upbringing in a country town with seven siblings. She is known for her generosity, particularly in baking pies for her church and community members. Monk consistently gave apple pies and other baked goods to those around her.
The kindness Monk extended through the years is now being reciprocated. Friends and fellow churchgoers have showered her with love, food, and support. Her family, including her devoted husband, ensures she is well cared for during her battle with cancer.
Although advised against chemotherapy due to her age, Monk remains calm and composed. Her faith supports her, and she finds comfort in her religious beliefs. She believes in spreading kindness and remaining grateful until the end, trusting in her faith to guide her.
Monk’s story continues to inspire smiles, as she shares gratitude for the support received from loved ones, her community, and strangers ready to cheer for the ‘Taco Bell queen.’
