President Trump is questioning the integrity of elections. As mail ballots are counted slowly in California, he expresses doubt about outcomes that do not favor him. Despite lacking evidence of significant fraud, he frames the rise of a candidate for Los Angeles mayor as a Democratic scheme.
Trump has often cast Democratic victories with suspicion. In one of America’s most liberal cities, he voiced concern over the L.A. mayoral runoff. Spencer Pratt, a Trump-supported Republican, led L.A. mayoral candidate Nithya Raman on election night. Though Democrat Karen Bass was ahead, Pratt initially secured second place, yet Raman overtook Pratt as more Democratic mail ballots were counted. Republican leads that fade, termed a “red mirage,” are not uncommon.
Trump’s reaction recalls his response to the 2020 election results, perpetuating doubt about vote counts. Such rhetoric previews potential reactions to the November congressional elections. He criticized mail-in voting, suggesting it is an inherently flawed method. In March, he proposed strict voter ID laws targeting mail ballots at a Republican lawmakers’ event.
