Federal immigration officers detained an immigrant following a car chase that ended with a crash into a tree in Chicago’s Northwest Side. Surveillance footage captured the chase, showing two dark vehicles pursuing a red car along West Grace Street towards North Olcott Avenue in the Dunning area.
Footage revealed the red car being rammed near the intersection of Grace and Olcott. Homeland Security confirmed a targeted operation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to arrest Konrad Wojciech Darlak, described as a ‘criminal illegal alien from Poland.’ Darlak tried to escape, leading to a collision, and then fled on foot. ICE officers claimed they used minimal force for the arrest.
Doorbell camera footage showed law enforcement vehicles chasing a red sedan, with the pursuit ending when the car hit a tree. Reports stated Darlak had past arrests for drug possession, obstruction of justice, domestic battery, and dangerous materials transport. Court records confirmed convictions for retail theft, resisting an officer, and domestic battery with a sentence of community service in 2011.
In 2024, Darlak received supervision following a DUI conviction. Despite attempts to contact his legal representative, no response was received. The arrest of Darlak for dangerous materials transport remained unverified.
A police report described two ICE agents approaching Darlak at North Nottingham Avenue to apprehend him. Darlak reversed into one agent’s car and sideswiped the other, resulting in the chase to Olcott where he lost control. He was then transported to Loyola Hospital by ICE agents for observation.
This pursuit comes after a similar federal agent operation in Albany Park. Community protests in Horner Park followed, opposing federal enforcement activities. The Chicago area had seen mass deportation efforts labeled Operation Midway Blitz, leading to significant arrests and deportations in previous months.
Witness Edward Krueger heard sirens near Grace and Olcott and checked his home surveillance. He watched the chase and the subsequent arrest, observing agents with ‘police’ and ‘ICE’ markings. Other videos showed federal officers at the crash scene alongside Chicago police securing the area.
By early afternoon, the red sedan remained at the crash site. As it was towed, a pole and tire tracks became visible. Observers noted the typically quiet street had returned to calm by midday. Locals described the incident as rare police activity.
Krueger, now living in the quiet neighborhood for safety, expressed frustration with the federal operation’s impact. He noted the federal agents’ actions had more direct negative effects on him than the immigrants they pursued, citing his wife’s experience in schools as the previous exposure to such activities.
