Republican Senator Susan Collins will face Democrat Graham Platner in the upcoming fall election. NBC News reports that both candidates secured their primaries, leading to an anticipated race for Senate control. Collins, elected to the Senate in 1996, ran unopposed, aiming for a sixth term. Platner, a veteran and oyster farmer, encountered minimal competition in the Democratic primary after Governor Janet Mills suspended her campaign.
The race signifies more than expected outcomes. It’s a crucial battleground for the Senate’s future. With Democrats holding 47 seats, they need a net gain of four to seize the majority. As the only Republican senator from a state President Trump lost in 2024, Collins remains a top Democratic target.
Collins has proven resilient, often overcoming efforts to unseat her. In 2020, she defied expectations by winning re-election by over 8 points, despite Trump losing the state by about 9 points. The president backs her, emphasizing the need to preserve Republican control. Previous Democratic challengers backed by the party establishment have failed against Collins. Platner represents a new type of candidate, advocating for populist reforms and challenging the status quo. However, he faces controversies over past actions.
He faced backlash for a tattoo linked to Nazi imagery and years-old online posts criticizing police and making controversial statements. More recent allegations about his behavior from former partners add to the scrutiny. Platner dismisses these as outdated and insists they don’t reflect his current views.
These issues create discomfort among Democratic leaders, some of whom endorsed Platner after Mills’s exit. Nevertheless, some have urged replacement if he withdraws by July 13, which he refuses to do. Supporters like Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren continue to back him, citing competitive poll results.
Collins aims to focus on her achievements for Maine, downplaying national politics. As chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, she emphasizes local contributions and recent milestones like casting her 10,000th consecutive vote.
