The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly close to hiring Mike Babcock as head coach in an effort to secure a Stanley Cup victory. There’s growing urgency within the team to succeed while star players Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl remain part of the roster.
This potential hiring has sparked outrage among many Oilers fans. Numerous supporters have voiced their opposition on social media, urging the team not to proceed with employing Babcock, whose recent history has been marred by controversy.
Back in 2023, Babcock resigned from his position as head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets, less than three months into his tenure. His resignation followed accusations of inappropriate conduct toward players.
If the Oilers decide to hire Babcock, he will face an NHL investigation before he can start his role. TSN’s Darren Dreger has reported that the NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) has requested this investigation, focusing on allegations of privacy invasion during Babcock’s time in Columbus. He reportedly looked through personal photos on players’ phones, raising significant concerns.
Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic provided additional insights, stating that the NHL awaits a decision from Edmonton. If the Oilers choose to hire Babcock, the league will proceed with the investigation as per the NHLPA’s request.
Babcock’s methods have come under scrutiny not just for privacy issues. He has faced allegations of bullying, notably with former Detroit Red Wings player Johan Franzen, who experienced a nervous breakdown. Furthermore, Babcock reportedly pressured former Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner to rank teammates based on effort and benched players such as Mike Modano and Mike Commodore due to personal disputes.
The Oilers must weigh these controversies against their aspirations for success. The potential investigation and subsequent actions by the NHL may impact their decision on Babcock’s hiring.
