World Cup Day 5: Analysis and Team Rankings

1 week ago 0

Day 5 of the World Cup concluded, and each of the four games ended in a tie. However, the day stood out as one of the more memorable 24 hours in recent World Cup history. Tournament favorite Spain had a surprising 0-0 draw with Cape Verde’s determined team, and Iran’s match against New Zealand showed great excitement in Los Angeles.

With two days remaining before the final 16 teams make their debut, here’s a look at how the first 32 teams performed after their initial games:

They Look Strong

1. Germany
2. United States of America
3. Sweden
4. Ivory Coast
5. South Korea
6. Australia
7. Morocco
8. Japan
9. Netherlands
10. Brazil
11. Mexico

No team from Day 5 joins the list of those appearing as contenders or dark horses after their first game. Spain may soon join this tier, but not after their performance on Monday.

They Look Promising (Kinda)

12. Scotland
13. Spain
14. Belgium
15. Uruguay
16. Egypt
17. Cape Verde
18. Saudi Arabia
19. Ecuador
20. Canada
21. Switzerland
22. Iran
23. New Zealand
24. Bosnia & Herzegovina
25. Qatar
26. Turkey
27. Czechia
28. Haiti

This tier features teams with mixed performances, some with draws, and a few who lost but showed potential. Scotland won but struggled against Haiti. Spain did not lose but failed to score against Cape Verde. Uruguay’s first half against Saudi Arabia was weak, though they improved later. Belgium faced challenges against an African rival, and Egypt might feel they could have won.

They Look A Mess

29. Paraguay
30. Curaçao
31. Tunisia
32. South Africa

These four teams currently give little hope of advancing past the group stage. Tunisia, notably, fired manager Sabri Lamouchi following their 5-1 loss to Sweden.
