Deep in the heart of Oklahoma, Republican Congressman Kevin Hern is questioning why his potential future colleagues in the Senate have failed to pass a crucial voter ID and citizenship verification bill. Hern, who secured a primary victory recently, expressed concerns to Fox News Digital about the status of the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act. He mentioned that voter inquiries often focus on whether Congress will pass this legislation.
Hern stated, “They’re saying we need to work on the SAVE Act,” highlighting the persistent voter demand for action. Yet, the bill remains stalled in the Senate, facing opposition from Democrats and a few Republican senators.
This is something I’m not real sure why Republican senators are not supporting,Hern said, acknowledging the predictable Democratic resistance but puzzled by some Republicans’ stance.
Hern has served five terms in the House of Representatives, reaching the position of House Republican Policy Chair. He also briefly ran for Speaker of the House after Kevin McCarthy was ousted. Hern decided to seek a Senate seat following Trump’s nomination of Markwayne Mullin for the Department of Homeland Security.
Since announcing his Senate run, Hern has received endorsements from prominent senators and Donald Trump. Trump praised Hern for his strong ties with leading figures in Oklahoma and Washington.
Given Trump’s popularity in Oklahoma, where he has won statewide three times, Hern is expected to face minimal opposition in November’s election. However, he emphasizes hard work and preparation, traits that helped him build a McDonald’s franchise empire with 24 outlets in Oklahoma. His business success earned him the nickname “McCongressman.”
Hern stated, “I just respect the idea of work. I think working hard gives you a chance to compete with anybody. And so, same thing with the Senate race. I came out strong, set a tone from day one.”
Trump endorsed Hern quickly, recognizing his consistent efforts over the years. Hern’s commitment to hard work and relationship-building is something he has carried from his business life into politics.
If successful in November, Hern is not ruling out a bid for Senate GOP leadership. He explained that aspiring leaders must begin preparations well ahead of opportunities to succeed, according to the principle that late preparation often misses success.
Hern commented, “We’ve got people on third base who think they’re ready to be in leadership, and I’m running right past them, and they say, ‘Who’s this guy?’ And it’s a guy like me that’s just been working hard, positioning, building relationships. And I think that’s important going forward, and we’ll see what comes open.”
