ATLANTA, Ga. — In a closely watched race, billionaire businessman Rick Jackson defeated Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in the Republican runoff for the governor’s seat, according to the Associated Press. Despite an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, Jones was unable to secure a victory in this southeastern battleground state.
Jackson spent over $100 million from his own fortune on his campaign. He will now face former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in the general election this fall. Bottoms, who has worked in the Biden administration, secured her spot by winning a majority in the Democratic primary last month.
When I announced my campaign, I said the political class protects itself. It’s a cartel and I said I’m coming to break it up. Well, tonight, we shattered it,said Jackson in his victory speech.
Jackson was a political unknown to many Georgians until a flood of advertising helped share his story. Raised in foster care and unable to afford college, he built a business empire, a narrative that resonated with voters.
I know what it’s like to feel like nobody sees you, especially the elite and the powerful,
Jackson said to his supporters. His campaign received a boost from Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who joined him on the campaign trail.
Jackson has drawn inspiration from Trump and frequently described himself as an outsider, promising to apply business solutions to state governance.
On the other side, Jones, who served as a state senator before becoming lieutenant governor, highlighted his long-standing support from Trump. Jones argued that Jackson was misrepresenting himself and questioned his past political donations.
As the race progresses to the general election against Bottoms, Jackson has pledged to invest whatever is needed to win in November. Bottoms, in her statement, criticized Jackson for prioritizing personal wealth over public service, citing his health care company’s profits from no-bid state contracts while opposing Medicaid expansion.
This election is set against a broader national backdrop where Trump’s influence in the Republican Party remains significant. His endorsements have swayed various primaries, but recent events have shown the limits of that influence.
The stage is set for a dynamic battle in Georgia, with both Jackson and Bottoms positioning themselves to lead the state into the next chapter.
